"The Illustrated Police News, for example, was a penny weekly tabloid which dealt with crime, disaster and society scandal". No wonder Victorians were fascinated by sleaze. And for that matter, it is no surprise that will still are today. Tabloid press still means nasty, to my mind.

Nothing changes really, modern tabloids use the same lurid headlines.
