As pretty as the image is can you imagine the stench of all that dead fish?! :)

Yes! This is completely idealised of course. In reality she would have been dirty and smelt to high heaven. I am a shopkeeper's son and well remember the smell of smoking fish from a few shops away.

I am related to her (and Edwin Thomas Roberts). This is his daughter. They were relatively wealthy and I can assure you she would not have smelt to "high heaven" as Hermes put it. Fresh fish doesn't smell.....

Apologies, I'll take your word for it. I used to go to fish markets and they certainly had a distinctive aroma.
